Location: Site-Based Across Scotland (Nationwide Travel Required)

We’re seeking a highly skilled and motivated Setting Out Engineer to join our civil engineering team and play a pivotal role in delivering major infrastructure projects across Scotland.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced site environment and takes pride in delivering work with exceptional accuracy. From highways and drainage to earthworks and structures, you’ll be at the heart of ensuring every element is constructed to the correct line, level, and alignment.

Using industry-leading Trimble technology, you’ll support projects from start to finish while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Setting Out Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

• Accurately setting out civil engineering works using GPS, total stations, and traditional surveying equipment
• Using Trimble hardware and software for surveying, setting out, and digital data management
• Interpreting drawings, specifications, and digital design models to ensure precise implementation on site
• Carrying out topographical, control, and as-built surveys
• Establishing and maintaining site control points, datums, and benchmarks
• Verifying line, level, and alignment for earthworks, drainage, roads, and structures
• Coordinating setting-out activities with site management, subcontractors, and operatives
• Identifying and helping resolve design discrepancies and technical issues
• Supporting quality assurance processes, ITPs, and as-built documentation
• Maintaining accurate survey records and site data
• Mentoring junior engineers and site staff when required

What We’re Looking For Essential Skills and Experience

• Proven experience as a Setting Out Engineer on civil engineering projects
• Strong hands-on experience with Trimble GPS, total stations, and associated software
• Excellent understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, and survey techniques
• Ability to work independently and prioritise workload effectively
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• High attention to detail and commitment to quality

Desirable

• Experience in highways, drainage, earthworks, or major infrastructure projects
• Familiarity with BIM models and digital engineering workflows
• Relevant CSCS card
• SMSTS or SSSTS certification

Qualifications

• HNC, HND, or Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience)
